Gordon Murray, of Gordon Murray Design(GMD), father of the McLaren F1, the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren, the Rocket, numerous drivers and constructors F1 championships and a few other bits and bobs for good measure.
It is, of course, his role as father of the McLaren F1 that we are focusing on today, given this !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!
This should be exciting news but sadly, it’s not. Now maybe I’m too old, fat and slow to care anymore or maybe I’m just so jaded now that news of the re-incarnation of the iconic F1 just doesn’t excite me.
No that’s not true either, except for the old and fat part=( No I read the post with excitement hoping for more: understanding full well that I would not be one of the lucky 106. For me, at least for now, it is enough that ideas like this are still possible and cars in this category, the stuff of dreams, are still being made.
Here is what got me though: “ We are calling BP23 a ‘Hyper-GT’ because it’s a car designed for longer journeys, but with the high levels of performance and driver engagement expected of any McLaren .”
A Hyper-GT, the BP23, WTF? So McLaren is building this then?
The F1, while having some GT attributes was no GT car: it was a sports car, period, end of discussion!
I’m happy to see that McLaren is building and has customers for their cars but to call this the successor to the F1 is an abomination. Just because it has 3 seats and a central driving position does not make it the heir apparent. This guy should and does know:
So no, Gordon Murray is not too old, too fat or too slow to design the sports car that would or could be the true successor to the F1. Nor is the BP23 to anything at this point for me or anyone to pass judgement on: it simply doesn’t exist yet, but you and I, the people who fawn over the F1, hold it in such high regard as to ignore all other cars, or at least most of them, we are to old, fat and slow to realize that the past is the past, let it lay where it is and move on to bigger and better things.
Remember and reminisce fondly the achievements of yesterday but don’t live there and rest on yours or it’s laurels. Tomorrow is where it’s at and we should all be striving to do great things in the future.

I do wonder how much of this car is just a test bed for McLaren’s future technology in disguise. McLaren, Pagani and Koenigseggs always go on and on about getting customers to pay for development costs. Is this just a more blatant example because the name McLaren and 3 seats is a good cover for beta testing a bunch of new hybrid tech.

Nope. There’s still one in the copy. :)
Also, “ its laurels.”
